What Is 18k Gold Plating? Everything You Need to Know

When shopping for jewellery, you've probably come across the term “18k gold plated” but what exactly does it mean? And how does it compare to solid gold or other types of plating?

At Uchi & Soto, many of our pieces are made with 18k gold plating, chosen for its balance of luxury, quality, and accessibility. Here’s everything you need to know.

What is 18k Gold Plating?

18k gold plating is the process of coating a base metal, we use recycled brass, with a thin layer of 18 karat gold. It gives the look and feel of real gold without the hefty price tag of solid gold jewellery.

The “18k” refers to the purity of the gold used in the plating layer. Pure gold is 24 karats, so 18k means it contains 75% pure gold and 25% alloy for added strength. This makes it richer in colour and more durable than lower-karat options like 14k or 10k plating.

How Is 18k Gold Plating Done?

The process involves several steps:

- Surface Preparation – The base metal is cleaned and prepared for adhesion.
-Electroplating – A thin layer of 18k gold is applied using an electric current.
-Sealing or Coating – Some pieces may receive an extra coating (such as e-coating) to enhance longevity.

Gold plated jewellery should be treated with care to prevent wear over time. We recommend avoiding moisture, perfumes, and harsh chemicals.

Is 18k Gold Plated Jewellery Worth It?

Absolutely!  Especially if you're looking for a high-end aesthetic without the solid gold price. 18k gold plating offers:
- Affordability: Achieve a luxurious look at a more accessible price point.
- Warm Colour: The rich yellow hue of 18k gold flatters most skin tones.
- Sustainability: At Uchi & Soto, we use responsibly sourced materials and craft with intention.

Our best-selling Kin Necklace and Shikaku Earrings are both plated in 18k gold, combining meaning and craftsmanship with timeless style.

How to Care for 18k Gold Plated Jewellery

To keep your jewellery looking its best:
- Remove it before showering or working out.
- Avoid contact with perfumes, lotions, and cleaning products.
- Store it in a soft pouch or jewellery box when not in use.
- Clean gently with a soft, dry cloth, no harsh polishing needed.

With the right care, your 18k gold plated jewellery will stay beautiful for years to come.

Quality and Design Combine

18k gold plating offers the perfect bridge between luxury and practicality. Whether you’re layering necklaces or gifting a piece of meaning, Uchi & Soto’s 18k gold plated collections are made to honour beauty, balance, and story.
